A Taiwanese vegetable vendor who was able to donate $320,000.00 to different charities, doing it because she is happy doing it.
This is Chen Shu-Ju, one of the Ramon Magsaysay Awardees for 2012, the very epitome of the Power of Selflessness.
Until now, the event and the awarding still reverberate in my mind and heart. It is one of the most powerful events that I have ever attended.
The award is a celebration for people like Chen Shu-Ju, it is also a golden example for the audience during that day on how to stretch the human capacity to live the life of simplicity and frugality at the same time contributing BIG to society.
“I am ashamed to be in front of you. I do not know the reason why I should be in front of you. What I have done is something ordinary that any person can do. I do it because I am happy and there is nothing special from what I do”
This is how I remember her speech. This is what plays in my mind up to this time. This is how I see her face. She changed my life and she occupied a special space in my heart.
There are events that give you fun, there are events that give you business, there are events that give you knowledge, and there are events that changes you. This is one of the events that change you 360 degrees.
Ms. Chen Shu-Ju thank you very much, humanity has a lot of things to be proud of, and one of it is your good heart.
