5 Edutainment Tools that We Use in Events

Wednesday, August 12, 2015

As the word suggests, edutainment combines aspects of education and entertainment into products and experiences that seek to improve learning by making it not just painless but also pleasurable (NY Times).

In conferences that I attended, here are edutainment tools that I feel are effective in making the learning entertaining:

1.    Use of Videos

The videos are great storytellers. It is rich in texture. Most of the times, the use of videos in conferences makes the message of the speaker more powerful and easily absorbed by the attendees.

2.   Use of Polling Technology

The participative natures of polling delegates are effective in creating new ideas and findings on a particular topic. Delegates are happier sharing their views on what is being discussed and finding out how the group that they are in feels on the issue at hand.

3.   Use of Twitter Hashtags

There are apps that collate comment and questions when delegates use the event hashtags Organizers can show these comments and answer some of the comments, by doing so an engaging platform is created.

4.   Use of Games

In some conferences, organizers create games and reward winners with amazing prizes. These games sometimes leave an indelible mark in the minds and hearts of the delegates.

5.   Use of Open Space Technology

According to Wikipedia, Open Space Technology (OST) is an approach to purpose-driven leadership, including a way for hosting meetings, conferences, corporate-style retreats, symposiums, and community summit events, focused on a specific and important purpose or task — but beginning without any formal agenda, beyond the overall purpose or theme.

OST is a great way to learn and give power to the delegates. By breaking them into smaller groups, and the group deciding to discuss a particular topic that interests them.

If you will analyze these 5 tools, it is all about engaging and making the audience participate. Allowing the audience to participate it is the best way for them to have fun while learning – this is the essence of edutainment.
