Fifty Shades of Marketing: Be the Dominatrix in Your Marketing Segment!

The Asian Marketing Leadership Summit dubbed Fifty Shades of Marketing is a one of a kind conference for marketing professionals. The event takes place this coming July 8 – 9, 2015 at Sofitel Tent, Pasay City.

For the first time, there will be fifty speakers that will share valuable marketing insights on different areas of marketing like below-the-line marketing, digital marketing, branding, media and communication, and creative marketing.

The event opening keynote speaker is the senator Hon. Chiz Escudero, and the closing keynote speaker is one of the country’s top motivational speakers, Francis Kong.

The marketing industry continues to evolve. This event by the Philippine Marketing Association (PMA) is a testament to this evolution. I like to quote what the current PMA President Henry Tenedero said in his interview in ANC what this event is all about, which may also be what the current marketing is about, “ Fifty Shades of Marketing is, in more ways than one, about paradox marketing, a powerful framework of idea that utilizes the opposing polarities of each of the 4Ps to create an unorthodox approach to produce remarkable results. The 4Ps and their polarities are: Place: from private to public, Product: from company to customer, Price: from wholesale to retail, and Promotion: from IMC to engagement marketing.”

This annual event expects to gather 500 marketing professionals and enthusiasts. And just to be part of this gathering is an experience itself, knowing and exchanging insights with your peers is an enriching process. This is what happens during the event, and for me, one of the best takeaways when attending this event.

6th Philippine Business and Entrepreneurs Expo (PBEX), a Platform for SME Readiness

A 2013 survey by the Philippine Institute for Development Studies (PIDS) showed that Small and Medium Enterprises (SME) weak economic performance is due to “poor access to finance, technology, and skills, as well as information gaps and difficulties in product quality and marketing. Although there are government institutions or agencies responsible for the development and technology support of SMEs, the growth of the sector has not been vigorous enough to propel the economy.”

These challenges are still the same challenges the Philippine SME are facing, even now that the ASEAN Economic Integration is on our country.

The 6^th Philippine Business and Entrepreneurs Expo (PBEX) slated this July 17-19, 2015 at Megatrade, SM Megamall is a trade event and a educational forum where issues of the SMEs will be discussed and answered by invited resource speakers expert in the ASEAN Integration and SME situation of the country.

The 6^th PBEX holds three conferences as its highlight. The ASEAN SME Business Conference on July 17 – a forum that will discuss ASEAN Integration and its impact to SMEs; the Business Readiness and Disaster Preparedness Summit on July 18 – a timely forum that will discuss the critical actions to take during business emergencies; and the Travel Business Forum on July 19 – a forum that will tackle exciting opportunities and situations that ASEAN Integration presents to the tourism industry of the country.

Other educational activities include: Cash Flow Seminar, Asenso Pinoy Business Forum and Ka Entrep Summit and Negosyo Power Seminars.

More than 100 companies are participating in the event they belong to the following categories: Finance, Food, Franchising, Property, Beauty and Wellness, Transportation and Services.

In a study in 2006, the country’s economy is dominated by the micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs) dominated the economy and accounted for almost 99.6% of the total number of establishments. Despite this huge number, they only accounted for 61.2% of the country’s total employment and 35.7% of total value added.

In addition, the study revealed that in spite of present programs and policies created for SMEs, access to finance has remained one of the most critical factors affecting the competitiveness of the sector. Many private banks are still reluctant to lend to SMEs because of lack of credit information and low appreciation of lending to small businesses. More specific issues on SME financing include lack of acceptable collateral, slow loan processing, short repayment period, high interest rates, difficulties in load restructuring, and lack of start-up funds.

The 6^th PBEX is an SME Business Expo that continuously champions the growth and promotion of SMEs in the country. Since its inception, it has provided linkages between government agencies and institutions and participating companies.

The Day of Seafarers' Expo Set

In celebration of the Day of Seafarers this coming June 25, 2015, an expo offers business and livelihood opportunities will be held at the Luneta Seafarers’ Welfare Foundation Inc. (LUSWELF) and Palacio De Manila.

The Day of Seafarers Expo starts from June 22 – 25, 2015 at LUSWELF and Palacio De Manila.

The Day of Seafarers is an international event celebrated all over the world, and spearheaded by the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

This year IMO is campaigning to show how the multi-faceted maritime world offers a series of rich and fulfilling career opportunities for your people, both at sea and ashore.

According to Wikipedia, there are around 280,000 students who graduate from maritime schools every year. In 1996, it was estimated that there were more than 250,000 Filipino seafarers; in 2013, that number has been estimated to increase to about 460,000. Filipinos employed as seamen worldwide, more than any other nationality. The Philippines is one of the primary sources of seamen in the global shipping and transport market. Filipino seamen are often recruited to man tankers and sea vessels from countries, including those from Denmark, North America, South America, Europe and Asia, such as Japan, the United States, Panama, Liberia, Cyprus, Bahamas, Jamaica, Greece, Malta, Singapore, Norway and the Republic of Germany.

According to the Philippine Overseas Employment Administration (POEA), the Philippines is the world’s main supplier of seamen since 1987, making the Philippines the manning capital of the world. According to the Department of Labor and Employment of the Philippines, around 229,000 Filipino seamen were on board merchant shipping vessels around the world at any given time, the figure showed that Filipino seamen comprised more than 25 percent of 1.5 million mariners worldwide, the "single biggest nationality bloc" in the shipping industry. In 2007, according to the POEA, there were 1,157 seamen (869 in 2006) from the Philippines who had been employed by registered or accredited manning agencies.

In 2007, the figure of Filipino seamen overseas was 226,900. Included in the total - according to job function - 31,818 were designated or ranked as seamen; 19,491 as oilers; 17,355 as ordinary seamen; 7,810 as mess men; 7,778 as chief cooks; 7,737 as bosuns; 7,056 as third engineers; 6,599 third mates; and 6,388 as waiters. Based on the type of ship, 47,782 Filipino seamen were on board passenger-type vessels; 42,356 were on bulk carriers; 31,983 were on container ships; 25,011 were on tankers; 14, 462 were on oil or product tankers; 10,754 were on general cargo ships; 7,502 were on chemical tankers; 6,610 were on tugboats; 5,742 were on pure car carriers; and 3,471 were on gas tankers.

Another highlight of the “The Day of Seafarers Expo” is the first Marino Idol where Filipino Seafarers get to compete with unique competition.
